Davidlav25. How did you make out finding a TC. I should of asked you what engine you have on your kart. If its in the 6hp range then a Comet Tav30 will do. Be careful on Ebay with the 30 series, the chinese are making knock offs. No Knock offs on the 40 series yet. Also if you only need a 30 series, there is a new company in the states called GTC manufacturing that is making Torque convertors. There address is
http://gtcmanufacturing.com/

Also, I am documenting my build on another site http://www.diygokarts.com. the link to my thread is http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=8493

You could start your own thread there an upload pictures of your build. For the vidieo, upload it to Utube and just link it to your thread.. Very active at that site, often over 100 at a time online. great source for info on every aspect of Karting. There are several people over there documenting different spidercart build. Hope to see you there

Silvergrizz, thanks for the heads up on the torque converter on ebay. I'll check it out. I have tons of photos and video from beginning to end. The finished product is really sweet. It's been a riot watching my 11 yr old son ride it around. He's still learning to drive (pushing the brake and gas at the same time! ha!), he even drove over an old stump by accident and he and the cart survived! I'd love to send in my photos and video but I don't know where to send them. We stuck to the parts list provided (tires/rims, shocks, brake, etc...). Pricey on the shipping since I live in Alaska, but everything is good quality though. We did make a few modifications - little different seat to accomodate a 5 point seat belt, put some plating on the bottom and sides of frame. Had some minor setbacks once my son started driving it, mainly due to nuts and bolts needing to be tightened, no major issues though. The cart is very responsive in the steering and my son is having a total blast! I can only imagine what this will do with a torque converter. Good Luck!

You can still pick up Comet Torgue Convertors on EBay. I just pick up a 40 series driver and driven and two belts for around $310 US. I am also building the Arachnid. Started cutting steel on the 17th of July, but waiting for componets to arrive from the USA before welding to confirm placement & Fit. I bought the 40 Series Comet because I am going to use a Honda GX390 (13HP) engine. Basicaly stock, just able to breathe a bit better than stock :). Do you have any pictures of your finished project available to view anywhere? I have everything in transit except for rims/tires. Did you go with the recommended size?

Hello All,

My name is Bill and I just joined the forum. I have not built a Kart before, ... but some things very similar in my profession. I have been a Model Maker/Prototype Builder for the last 20 years. I bought the plans for the Arachnid a couple days ago and the plans are pretty straight forward and well done, and easy enough to construct. I just have a couple of questions before I start planing the items needed for the build.

1). What is the weight of the cart as built per plans, with out the engine?

2). Can the plans be scaled up slightly for a larger engine such as 1,000 - 1,300cc?

3). Since the sprocket is so low to the ground (from what I see in the sales video), ... has anyone tried to have the large sprocket on a pre-axle above the main axle and runs a smaller 1:1 sprockets to turn the main axle, thus eliminating a sprocket almost dragging on the ground?

4). How easy would this be to convert it to 4 wheel independent suspension?

5). Possibilities for 4 wheel drive?

Thanks
Bill

I just downloaded the Itzy Bitzy plans for my 6-yr old. I'm pretty handy but building karts is all new to me. Now that I see the cost of parts (and I don't know what shipping will be yet), isn't it quite a bit cheaper to just buy a kart? I know, I know...I wouldn't get the fun of building it and spending time with my son, but it seems like it will take $700-$800 just to build this basic model (based on MBI parts list you provided). Your thoughts?

Hey my son and I just finished this cool arachnid kart. But we're bummed out about the commet torque converter situation (out of business I guess). We decided to try a centrifugal clutch, but not too sure how that's going to work out. I'll have the clutch on this weekend. Is there any alternative torque converters being sold? If so, where? I have some pretty cool pics I'd like to send too. We followed your plans exactly and it worked out great and that's saying something for your plans because we'd never welded/fabricated before.

I am building an Arachnid go-kart and noticed you recommended an 8" kart steering rack. Money is a very nice thing and I was thinking about using a simple steering rod assemble with pitman arms instead of the steering rack to save money. Is this simpler set up possible on the Arachnid?

Well it just depends on how you want your steering set up. If you buy the steering box that we used you could mount it such a way that it was a straight shot to the steering wheel. In that case you would just need the 1 splineed U-Joint to go onto the steering box. I would just order two and start bolting things on and if you dont need it you have a spare laying around.

Hey there... I would not suggest the Recluse for your kart. If you are going to try to go those speeds I would start with a frame like the Arachnid or Tarantula. They have a lot more capability to add bigger motors and do more with gearing and such. The Recluse is our version of a Pocket Bike! Its tiny, fast and a ton of fun but I would not suggest going 50 MPH on this kart!

As far as the CAD application we dont really support it. it was just a free CAD viewer that was popular many years ago. I doubt it will work with any of the recent versions of Windows. I actually need to just take that out of the package.

hylomatt

Hey there... This is our simplest kart and cheapest to build. Because people are trying to build this on such a budget we decided to leave out some of the specifics so you can add on the parts you have laying around. We give a great start with the frame and parts list that we suggest. Once you have the frame put together it will be very obvious how the rest of it goes together.

We also dont give out SKUs for any of the parts because we have no control over there numbering structure. When I started with Spidercarts we used to put all the Skus and part numbers for our customers but then BMI would change a part number or SKU then our plans were wrong and people were ordering the wrong parts. And also BMI wont give us any deals on complete packages for our customers. We wanted to have a bundle people could pruchase if they so desired to finish their karts, but they wouldnt work with us so I am a bit put off buy them right now. We send so much business their way and they wont work with us at all... So...

16" should be fine for the tie rods, as for the splines you are correct. I used 2 on mine then ordered a spare. I would for sure order a spare of these no matter how you go as this is not a part you can just fake! If it breaks you are done till you get another one. Its just a good spare part to have laying around.

I wouldnt do it there. I would add the length to the top of the yoke for more strenght. That way you have the strength of the wishbone instead of just the one piece of 1x1 taking all the force. Just my opinion... We have some good builders here on the forum so maybe you will get some more feedback about this.

1 More question. When I do a search for TL Bushings on the Internet, I come up with "Taper Lock Bushings" These don't look at all like what you describe in the plans. Is there as part number or source for what you talking about when you say TL Bushungs?

Regarding my last post, (wish we could edit our posts) I finally figured out my error regarding the number of shockmounting tabs. 7 of one kind and 2 of another for a total of nine. 9th one on steering column. Still looking for answers regarding the rest of questions. Off to pick up steel this morning.

Corrections to parts list for Arachnid. 6" steering spline, you indicate 3 are required, but if you just buy a 25 inch steering shaft, none are required by my calculations. You indicate 2 Steering u joints, but I only see 1 required. You show 7 shock mounting tabs, but I calculate 8 required. Am I correct in these assumptions. I don't want to order more or less than I require to complete project, especially since I an importing from the USA. Thanks in advance for clearing this up.

Regarding tierods for the Arachnid. If I decide to buy instead of make, what distance do i need eye to eye? I am guessing at 16"

Anyone in Canada building this model. Picked up the plans and discovered that 14 Guage steel is not available here in Canada. Smallest I could find was .10 in 1X1 and .083 in 1 1/4 by 1 1/4. I figure this will add about 20% more weight to the frame. BTW 14 guage is roughly .075 wall thickness. Also wondering if anyone has found a Canadian source for parts?

Yea as John said all of the metal work done in our plans is cut and weld. This keeps expenses down for our customers not having to buy a pipe bender.
