Hi I am almost finished building the Arachnid gokart and the plans are great. I am looking at engines and was wondering what you recommend for the HP
Posted 8 months ago # -
We used the 10hp Tech. But I think anything 8 or over would work fine. If you go with a bigger one make sure the torque converter is rated for the HP you get. If you dont you will burn up belts like crazy... Send us pictures of your project! We will post them on the site. As the Arachnid is new to the Spidercarts family we dont have a lot of pictures from builders yet, so that would be great!

ok i will make sure to do that when i am finished

How fast does your Arachnid go with a 10 hp
Posted 8 months ago # -
Mine goes about 40mph with a torque converter on it and a 60 tooth sprocket.

I am helping my son build a arachnid go kart I was looking at a axle set up on ebay it is a 40in long 1in around axle 2 18 in tires disk brake and sprocket 41 tooth will this work or is the axle to narrow and spocket to small please help the package deal is 249.00 plus shipping thanks john

Well we spec a 1 1/4"x 45" axle for the Arachnid. So its a bit short and smaller in diameter. The sprocket wont really be a concern if you get a Torque Converter.
A 40" axle would work it will just pull your width in 5" on the back. So your front wheels will end up wider than your rear wheels.
If it is just a mechanical disk brake then I think you could probably get that package new for about the same price. However if he is selling this with a hydraulic disk brake then it is well worth the money just for the tires and brake.
If it was $150 I would say buy it just for parts but I might look elswhere.

Does the cart get good traction with the live axle in the back in mud, snow, ect.
Posted 8 months ago # -
Oh for sure! Its both wheels spinning no matter what! It does great!

What is the first go cart thought of.

I dont understand your question?

Hi, just purchased the plans for the Arachnid and was wondering if it is possible to use a motorcycle engine in this kart? if so, up to what size would you recommend?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Do you think it would work if i put a small snow plow on the front of the kart.
Posted 7 months ago # -
riverduk... yes there is plenty of room for just any motor you want to use and of course you should retro fit the plans to fit your needs. As for the size... Just what every you think you can hook up...LOL I would start looking at around 250cc

John...
as for the snow plow? well... not a lot of weight in these karts and they are only rear wheel drive. I think you might not be happy with the outcome if you try it. But, if your bored and want a project, go for it!

Just bought the Arachnid plans and I am very impressed with the quality. Would it be possible to make it a 2 seater by widening the chassis by 16 - 18 inches? If it is possible would you recommend increasing the tube sizes by 1/4"?
Is the GrandDaddy just a 2 seat arachnid?
thanks,

anflyer1,
Yes but the Arachnid actually came after the GD. So it has much of the same construction. So the answer is yes but make sure to take into consideration the suspension for two instead of a single place.

I just ordered the archnid plans, and I was wondering what is the minimum hp engine you will need and how much that would coast also if you could, would you list an online source i could order an engine like that from. Lastly i was wondering if you could give me a rough estimate of how much it will coast when the go kart is finished.

Anyone in Canada building this model. Picked up the plans and discovered that 14 Guage steel is not available here in Canada. Smallest I could find was .10 in 1X1 and .083 in 1 1/4 by 1 1/4. I figure this will add about 20% more weight to the frame. BTW 14 guage is roughly .075 wall thickness. Also wondering if anyone has found a Canadian source for parts?

Regarding tierods for the Arachnid. If I decide to buy instead of make, what distance do i need eye to eye? I am guessing at 16"
Posted 2 months ago # -
Corrections to parts list for Arachnid. 6" steering spline, you indicate 3 are required, but if you just buy a 25 inch steering shaft, none are required by my calculations. You indicate 2 Steering u joints, but I only see 1 required. You show 7 shock mounting tabs, but I calculate 8 required. Am I correct in these assumptions. I don't want to order more or less than I require to complete project, especially since I an importing from the USA. Thanks in advance for clearing this up.

Regarding my last post, (wish we could edit our posts) I finally figured out my error regarding the number of shockmounting tabs. 7 of one kind and 2 of another for a total of nine. 9th one on steering column. Still looking for answers regarding the rest of questions. Off to pick up steel this morning.

1 More question. When I do a search for TL Bushings on the Internet, I come up with "Taper Lock Bushings" These don't look at all like what you describe in the plans. Is there as part number or source for what you talking about when you say TL Bushungs?

Look for the bushings at a tracktor supply or farm supply store.

16" should be fine for the tie rods, as for the splines you are correct. I used 2 on mine then ordered a spare. I would for sure order a spare of these no matter how you go as this is not a part you can just fake! If it breaks you are done till you get another one. Its just a good spare part to have laying around.

Robert, thanks for the feedback. 1 remaining question, do I need 1 or 2 u joints for the steering?
Posted 2 months ago # -
Well it just depends on how you want your steering set up. If you buy the steering box that we used you could mount it such a way that it was a straight shot to the steering wheel. In that case you would just need the 1 splineed U-Joint to go onto the steering box. I would just order two and start bolting things on and if you dont need it you have a spare laying around.

I am building an Arachnid go-kart and noticed you recommended an 8" kart steering rack. Money is a very nice thing and I was thinking about using a simple steering rod assemble with pitman arms instead of the steering rack to save money. Is this simpler set up possible on the Arachnid?
