3. Metal Choices

/In this video, we at Spidercarts discuss the types of metal you’ll need to complete the frame for your project. The primary metal used will be 1-inch by 1-inch square tubing, with a 14-gauge thickness. When purchasing this tubing, you’ll need to specify these dimensions at your metal supply store. The tubing typically comes in 20 to 24-foot lengths, so plan ahead to ensure you have the space to transport it. If necessary, you can have the store cut the metal into 12-foot sections, though this will cost extra, about $5 to $10 per cut. For most projects, about 30 to 35 feet of this tubing is needed, so two 24-foot sticks will be sufficient, with some leftover for future projects.

Next, we cover flat iron, which is 1-inch by 3/16-inch flat stock. You’ll only need about 2.5 feet of this, which can be picked up from your local hardware store. Additionally, angle iron—1-inch by 1-inch by 1/8-inch thick—is required in small quantities, about 6 inches. However, angle iron is typically sold in 3-foot sections, so just picking up one section will be more than enough. Finally, we mention that you’ll need some miscellaneous nuts and bolts, which we’ll go over as the project progresses. With these materials in hand, you’re ready to head to the store and start gathering the metal for your recluse frame.
